Acids are the "sour" characters. They are defined by their generosity—they love to donate Hydrogen ions ($H^+$) in an aqueous (water) solution.

The Science: When an acid is dissolved in water, it dissociates to release $H^+$ ions (or hydronium ions, $H_3O^+$). The concentration of these ions determines the acidity.

🟦 Bases: The Cleaners

Bases are the "bitter" characters. They are defined by their ability to donate Hydroxide ions ($OH^-$) in water. Bases that are soluble in water are called Alkalis.

The Science: Bases react with $H^+$ ions from acids to neutralize them.


2. The Great Interactions (Chemical Reactions)

⚔️ Acid + Metal: The "Pop" Reaction

When an acid attacks a metal warrior, it displaces the hydrogen, which escapes as gas.

Identification: The gas evolved produces a POP sound when a burning candle is brought near it.

🥤 Acid + Carbonate: The Fizzy Reaction

When acids meet metal carbonates or bicarbonates, they produce salt, water, and carbon dioxide gas.

The pH scale is the ruler of the Chemistry Kingdom. It measures the concentration of $H^+$ ions in a solution.

pH > 7: Basic Kingdom (Higher is stronger).


4. The Salt Family & Industrial Products

Salts are a vast family of ionic compounds formed by the neutralization reaction.

🎂 Baking Soda ($NaHCO_3$) - The "Cake Balloon"

Preparation: Sodium chloride + Water + $CO_2$ + Ammonia.

Function: Upon heating, it releases $CO_2$ gas, which gets trapped in dough, making the cake rise and become soft and spongy.

🧺 Washing Soda ($Na_2CO_3 \cdot 10H_2O$)

Function: Used for removing permanent hardness of water and in the glass/soap industries.

🩹 Plaster of Paris ($CaSO_4 \cdot \frac{1}{2}H_2O$)

The Story: Made by heating Gypsum ($CaSO_4 \cdot 2H_2O$) at 373 K.

Function: When mixed with water, it re-hydrates back into a hard mass (Gypsum), making it perfect for setting fractured bones.


🎓 Summary Checklist for Board Exams

Indicators: Litmus, Phenolphthalein, and Methyl Orange change color to indicate acidic/basic media.

Conductivity: Acids/Bases conduct electricity ONLY in the presence of water (due to mobile ions).

Crystallisation: Some salts contain a "fixed number of water molecules" (Water of Crystallisation) that give them their color and shape, like in copper sulphate ($CuSO_4 \cdot 5H_2O$).

Dilution Rule: Always add Acid to Water, NEVER water to acid (it's highly exothermic and can cause splashes!).
